Background: It is well known that the condition of terminally ill patients affects not only patients themselves, but also their family members since the patients experience a variety of symptoms. The purpose of this study was to investigate modifiable factors that influence the quality of sleep and depression of family caregivers.
Methods: A survey was conducted with 30 family caregivers of hospice patients who had been hospitalized at a general hospital in Seoul from December 2016 to February 2017. The questionnaire consisted of items on the general characteristics of the subjects and their sleep quality, Beck¡¯s Depression Inventory II, and patient¡¯s symptom control scores rated by family caregivers.
Results: The quality of sleep of family caregivers was significantly influenced by patients¡¯ constipation (r=0.619, P£¼0.001), respiratory disturbance (r=0.671, P£¼0.001), depression (r=0.700, P£¼0.001), anxiety (r=0.527, P£¼0.01), and daytime drowsiness (r=0.464, P£¼0.05). The depression of family caregivers was significantly associated with patients¡¯ constipation (r=0.907, P£¼0.001), depression (r=0.622, P£¼0.001), anxiety (r=0.964, P£¼0.001), and daytime drowsiness (r=0.543, P£¼0.01).
Conclusion: Our findings show that family caregivers had a lower quality of sleep and higher depression when constipation, depression, anxiety, and daytime drowsiness of hospice patients were not well controlled. There results suggest that ways to promote health of family caregivers of hospice patients need to be sought, such as improving the quality of sleep and lowering depression.
